How to update McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.x DAT files, manually?

McAfee VirusScan is one among the other McAfee products and can be found with McAfee LiveSafe, McAfee Total Protection, and McAfee AntiVirus Plus. It isn’t available as a standalone app.

Sometimes it is essential to go for manually update of DAT files for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise. For example-When, a scheduled McAfee AutoUpdate fails or when running McAfee SuperDAT file.

Check out the steps as listed below to manually update the DAT files for McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.8-

  1. Get the latest DAT files:
  • Create a temporary folder –C:\DAT using Windows Explorer.
  • Download the latest DAT

Note- To download a DAT, Engine, XDAT file, go to security-updates/security-updates.aspx. You need to download these files if the automated updated files or you wanted to use an Extra DAT on an infected system.

  • Download ####xdat.exe(where #### is the latest DAT version)
  1. Allow the modification to McAfee services
  • Click on the option ‘Start’.
  • Select the option ‘Programs’ followed by ‘McAfee’.
  • Click on ‘McAfee VirusScan Console’.
  • Double-click on ‘Access Protection’
  • Prevent McAfee services from being stopped’ deselect it.
  • Click ‘Ok’.
  • Exit the Console.

Tips- For offline mode of purchasing you need McAfee retail card as well as McAfee product key to download, install, and activate the product on your systems.

     3. Discontinue McAfee Services.

  • Click on the option ‘Start’
  • Select the ‘Run’ option.
  • Enter ‘services.msc’ and press Enter.
  • Click on the each of the following services and select the option ‘Stop’.
    • McAfee Mc Shield.
    • McAfee Framework.
  • Exit the ‘Services’ screen.
  1. Extract the DAT file
  • Extract the DAT file by using ‘WinZip’ or a similar file compression utility. For example-
  • Select the following extracted files by holding the ‘Ctrl’ key-
    • avvclean.dat
    • avvnames.dat
    • avvscan.dat
  • Click on one of the selected files and press’ Copy’ option.
  • Browse to C:\ProgramFiles\Common Files\McAfee\Engine
  • Click the ‘Engine’ directory and select ‘Paste’ option.
  • When asked to replace the existing files, go for selecting ‘Yes to all’.

5.  Reboot McAfee services

  • Click on the option ‘Start’
  • Select the option ’Run’.
  • Enter services.msc and press ‘Enter’.
  • Click each of the services below and press ‘Start’ option:
    • McAfee McShield
    • McAfee Framework
  • Exit the ‘Services’ screen.
  1. Verify the DAT version has been updated
  • Select the option ‘Start’
  • Click on the option ‘Programs’ followed by ‘McAfee’.
  • Select the option ‘McAfee VirusScan Console’.
  • Click on the option ‘Help’ followed by ‘About’.

  1. Prevent modification to McAfee services
  • Click on the option ‘Start’
  • Select the option ‘Programs’
  • Click on the option ‘McAfee’, followed by ‘McAfee VirusScan Console’
  • Select ‘Prevent McAfee services from being stopped’
  • Click on the option ‘Access Protection’.
  • Click ‘Ok’.
  • Exit the console.
